Hi Melbourne Joomla User Goup,
I attended last year both days on Joomla Day Melbourne. It was very good and I learned many new things.
I am mainting already a website on Joomla 2.5 but hosting & registration is overseas.

Now that I am already 2 1/2 years in Melbourne, I got some ideas about a new .com.au website.
Could you maybe suggest which supplier to use for the domain & hosting?

I read some reviews and found out different opinions. I need something with good and prompt support.

Thank you,
Vasilis

Hi Vasillis,

I am pretty happy with the service I get from ventraip.com.au which do hosting and domain registration.

Their plans work well with Joomla and the Economy cPanel hosting account is less than $100 per year.

Domain registration is $24.95 for 2 years for a .com.au domain and you can transfer it for free. I like my hosting and domain registration with the same provider for ease of administration and if the hosting provider moves your account to another server, any DNS changes are updated automatically.

You can choose to have your account hosted in the Melbourne data centre.

I'm not on a commission but just appreciate good service. I look after about 50 local Joomla clients and have steered more than half of them to VentraIP and have the least grief with them.

Avoid Crazy Domains if possible and if you need to do more homework on this, a good place to start is: forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/116

I noticed that in order to register you have to provide abn, vic bn etc.
Is this compulsory? If someone wants just to try something out as a hobby?

Requirements vary depending on the type of domain name. You'll need an ABN or Registered Business Number to register a .com.au domain but this requirement does not apply for .com or .net etc.
