Hi
I have v. basic Joomla editor skills for our website. Selected 'update' yesterday - following prompt on control panel, now web page doesn't load - no error messages, just a blank screen. Can still edit pages etc in joomla. Hoping there's a simple solution and would appreciate and ideas?

There probably is a simple solution ...

First thoughts: a "blank page" is indicative of a PHP execution error. This could be from an almost limitless variety of sources. I suggest that you enable Joomla's Debug mode and set the Error Reporting level to "maximum". If this show an error message as a consequence of doing that, please post the error message here and we'll see what we can do after that. OK? B)

If you can't access your backend site to enable Joomla Debug mode and set the Error Reporting level, these things can be changed by [judiciously] modifying the file configuration.php in your site's root folder.

Thanks so much for the reply.
I've enabled Debug mode, and set error message to maximum.
No errors have come up on the console or blank web page?
Is there anywhere else I should be looking/testing?

If you have access to cPanel or Plesk Panel (Shared hosting) see if you can access the logs. In particular the Apache logs and/or PHP logs. That may shed some lite on the issue.

Thanks.
It appears I don't have access to these (http://mydomain/cpanel - brings up blank page)?

That may not necessarily be where your cPanel is located.

I believe @manuman was referring to the cPanel utility implemented by your hosting provider. The location of your cPanel utility would be given to you in the webhosting provider's customer kit or FAQ page on their website. I suggest that you contact your hosting provider to find out how to access the cPanel utility. In this particular case, @manuman was not referring to a Joomla feature.

If you're unable to access your cPanel utility by following your hosting provider's instructions, this is something you need to resolve with your hosting provider.

Thanks again.
I checked with my webhosting provider (Dreamhost) and found:
"Is cPanel available at DreamHost?
No. DreamHost's panel was built in-house and is currently the only panel available.
Checking PHP log - not done automatically."
Is there some other method?
I appreciate the time spent on this.

Puzzling; I'm not sure what to make of that.

Coming back to the issue at hand: the other [most likely] reasons for a blank screen are:

1) Defects within the version of PHP implemented at your webhost, including the possibility that your webhost has implemented a buggy version of PHP (particularly relevant if we're discussing PHP 7.x)

2) A third-party ["non-core"] extension that's interfering with the basic operation of your [frontend] website (including the possibility that such a extension you've installed is not compatible with either the PHP software provided by your webhost or is imcompatible with J! 3.7.3)

3) Another website on the server (esp. if it's located within the webspace allocated to your user account) that's draining the life from the site in question.

4) Some other factor that we're not currently aware of. As @manuman wrote earlier, looking at the site logs maintained by your webhosting provider would provide those clues but, if you're not able to access those things yourself, that might be out of your hands to investigate those things yourself.

Just as a matter of interest (as a test) can you switch the site template to use Protostar? Does this allow the frontend to become "visible"?

Hi - a quick update, after chatting with web host, an error log (too many to paste) but along the lines of the following appear:

[Wed Aug 03 06:56:45 2011] [error] [client 86.125.103.68] File does not exist: /home/wgcpp/wgcpp.com/styles.css, referer: wgcpp.com/home

Any further ideas? TIA

Sounds like a problem with the template (the .CSS is an indicator). Have you attempted to switch to the Protostar template (even as a test)?

But I wouldn't think that one missing .CSS file would cause the entire website to go walkabout like that. There's got to be more to this than just one missing file.

Hi Sozzled,
This message occurs for all .css files (too big to paste ie too many links)
I'd be happy to try the test of the protostar template but no idea how.
Please let me know if this is getting beyond a quick fix for you guys, and I'll outsource this.
Cheers

If you want, we can take this offline on Skype. Use the "confidential" forum tag (only the forum moderators can read the contents of "confidential" information), like this:
[confidential]Skype name: xxxxxxxxxxxx[/confidential]
and I'll get in touch with you.

I'd try disabling Search Engine Friendly URLs and URL Rewriting in Global Configuration and then temporarily rename .htaccess to .htaccess.old to see if this helps. Try also renaming any php.ini file on the root folder to php.ini.old.

This should help eliminate a few causes of this type of error.

You could also try changing the PHP version to PHP 5.6 if you are on PHP 7.x or vice versa to see if it has something to do with PHP.

What has changed recently? Have any new extensions been installed? Try temporarily disabling any new plugins or modules.

Assuming there are no core hacks, you could run a backup and then try the "Reinstall Joomla core files" option in Joomla Update.

There's always the Extensions -> Manage -> Database -> Fix option (a bit like tech support saying have you tried switching it off and back on?) when we get stuck.

The advice above is good. Only thing I'd add is that I find it easier to debug these kind of issue on your localhost. I would suggest taking a backup with Akeeba, and restore it onto your local PC. As already mentioned, usually a blank page indicates a PHP error.

Regarding your "File does not exist" error on CSS files, that is unlikely to cause a blank page. You should be looking for "PHP Fatal error" in your PHP error log.

Fair enough. In the meantime, my offer still stands to discuss—via Skype—any issues that may affect your ability to update to J! 3.7.3. It's always a good idea, however, for anyone having problems with Joomla, to keep your Joomla up to date with the current stable version available.
