A big thank you to Jeanette for presenting tonight, and sharing some hints and tips.

Here are some Joomla tips discussed
  • Update - make sure you keep things up-to-date, otherwise site may be hacked
  • Organise file structure correctly at the beginning - difficult to change later
  • Spend time optimizing images
  • Give images meaningful names
  • Alt tags for images
  • PHP version - ask web host to update if needed
  • Lets encrypt for HTTPS
  • Pick a big name template provider and stick with it
  • Turn on email cloaking plugin
  • Front end editor. Can limit icons using JCE
  • NotificationAry plugin - get a email notification when an article or another content is added or changed
  • varvy.com/ - to check SEO
  • checkgzipcompression.com/ - to check if GZIP is enabled

Hi

Damn, it would be good if Perth had active Joomla community...

Any actual thoughts on what 'organise file structure' actually entails?

Any thoughts on 'keep site up to date'?
I haven't updated to 3.6 yet, might do soon, but feel a bit uneasy about it - how out of date could one reasonably be?

Are big name template providers really that great, they can often complicate things greatly?

Be good to here some of the comments

Thanks

Jon

You can also subscribe via iTunes itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/the-tim-plum...la-show/id1142056156

Let me know if you still have any questions after listening.

Hi

Kudos for getting a podcast going!
I hope you are able to sustain it and able to be as positive as Joomlabe.at (remain diffrrent, too)

Re my questions (and speaking only for myself)
I would say, upgrade to latest version in test environment only, wait for the dust to settle, wait for your extension developers to catch up, wait for their dust to settle... upgrade

Big template providers impose a workflow, if you are only tweaking your site a little, ie border red instead of blue etc, cool, otherwise you can end up fighting your template trying to make it do things it wasn't meant to.

I would be interested to see/hear of examples highlighting organised file structure and how they benefit the site comoared to what they could/would have been.

Be good to get anyone's thoughts :)
