The Joomla Certification Program has been created to ensure the competence of Joomla! professionals through documented measurement of skills and knowledge. The program aims to establish a certain standard whilst promoting a qualified workforce.
Professional certification can play an important role in the decision of a company or business owner when hiring skilled individuals for specific roles.
The Joomla! Administrator Exam is the first available Joomla! certification exam. It covers topics related to the everyday use of building, managing and maintaining Joomla! websites.
Joomla Australia has been an enthusiastic participant in the Joomla Certification Program, and since 2017 has offered Australians regular opportunities to sit the Joomla Administrator Exam. If you are interested in gaining Joomla Certification, please fill out the Expression of Interest form in the Certification Quicklinks and we will be in touch shortly.
Topics covered by the Joomla! Administrator Exam:
- Joomla! Architecture
- Preparing and installing Joomla!
- Website Structure
- Managing and Editing Articles
- Managing Users and Access (ACL)
- Managing Menus
- Security and Maintenance
- Upgrading the System
- Managing Extensions
- Multilingual Sites
- No PHP, CSS or FTP knowledge necessary
For more information, please visit the official Joomla! Certification site.
Technical Requirements
You must bring your own laptop to sit the exam. Please ensure your system meets the minimum technical requirements as follows:
System Requirement
- Supported Windows platforms: Windows 7 and above
- Supported OS X platforms: 10.7 and above
- 2GB RAM
- Wireless Internet Connection (at least 1Mbps - provided via the venue but please ensure you have wireless functionality)
* Linux is currently not supported because a Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is not available for Linux. Similarly, iPads and Android tablets are not supported.
Next Steps
- Once an exam has been announced, visit the Certification website to create an account. Click on the 'Add to Cart' button to purchase an exam seat, and click on 'Checkout'.
- The global base list price of an exam is USD$100. However, the Australian price is set at USD$60. A coupon code will be provided which must be used during the exam purchase process to have USD$40 deducted from the global price.
The provided code will be for a specific exam - if you try to use it on a different event, your enrolment will be suspended. So do not purchase an exam until you are 100% ready to sit for it.
Proceed to Checkout. - You must bring your own Windows or OS X device to sit the exam. After purchasing the exam, you need to install the Safe Exam Browser (SEB). The link to install this is available via the Certification FAQ. There will be a session prior to your exam to ensure you have done this correctly. Please ensure you have installed the SEB prior to arriving at the pre-exam prep session.
- Exams will be available to purchase until 2 days prior to the exam date. You will not be able to purchase exams on the day.
What to Know
- Make sure you study! Even if you've been using Joomla! since the early days, it doesn't mean the exam will be easy to pass.
- The exam covers core Joomla! material only, no 3rd party extensions. If you aren't up to speed on things like core templates, TinyMCE, multi-language, ACL, or overrides, it's time to get studying.
- There is a demo exam available at exam.joomla.org (once you've registered an account) - however, this only demonstrates the exam format, not actual questions. The best way to study is to utilise the Learning Guide.
- The exam consists of 60 questions in 90 minutes. Some questions are true/false, some are multiple choice format. Many questions require you to "select all that apply" to get that answer correct. You won't need to type out words or sentences.
- The required pass rate is 80%.
- You will be notified of your results as soon as you submit your answers. If you pass, you will appear in the Joomla! Certified User Directory (so choose a nice photo!).
- The exam will be conducted within the SEB on your device. When the SEB is running, there is no access to any other software on your device, including password managers or browser saved passwords. Because of this, it is recommended you visit the exam dashboard on a normal browser prior to the exam, and change your password to something that is easy to remember. You will be able to change it back to something safe after the exam is complete.
- As well as the SEB, a startup file will be placed onto your laptop's desktop. This will be done via USB. The startup file is used to start the exam. If you don't have a USB port on your laptop, please advise your supervisor ASAP.
