Hi all,

I have a rather urgent issue on one of our websites that has just come up.
(website name removed)

The site has been up for around a year without issue.
It has just now got caught in a redirection loop.

The site has an external seo company that does access the cpanel set up and the cms.
They are not supposed to make changes without notifying us, but I think this has happened.
(will be contacting them when they are open tomorrow)

This is what I have done to problem solve so far:

Joomla 1.5.26
sh404sef was installed but not enabled, I have uninstalled this
xmap was installed but not being used i have uninstalled this

Core sef was being used
While this was switched on the error message was "Forbidden access flooding"
Once this was switched off the message went to this:
(in firefox) The page isn't redirecting properly
"Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

I have then gone in and checked the .htaccess file for any changes.
I found some 301 redirects.
I took a copy of these and then removed them from the .htaccess file and then re uploaded and cleared cache, but found no change to the site.

I have tried accessing the site via the ip with the same error message.

so a bit stuck as to what to do next.
Obviously a big issue with a client site down, so I am keen to get it solved.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Other than that I will keep researching and testing.

Regards,

Ant.

Most of these redirection issues are cause by having two menu items with the same alias. Change the alias in one item or use "alias menus" and you won't have a problem.

Hi Sozzled,

thanks for the feedback.
Just did a check. No double on any many alias's.

We also took a back up of the site and did a reinstall with a different cpanel username.
(Just trying to see if it was domain related) and the new install fails as well.
It tries to open the existing websites address. (website name removed)

Cant access via ip either.

So it seems that no matter what we paste into the address bar, anything with that ip tries to redirect to the above url

Both on the new upload and the current site.

Which would suggest an onsite issue, rather than an external redirection issue??

Cheers,

Anthony.

Just in the interests of following up and resolving the problem.
Our SEO friends have in fact made edits to the template index.php file.

After switching to another template the site works again.
Probably another reason why one should never let a 3rd party have access to your site.

Anyways that should pretty much wrap up this topic.

cheers,

anthony.

Can you document the speciific change to see what the cause was to help others recognise their mistakes?

Hi Patrick,

Here was the offending bit of code that was added to the template index.php file. (not the main index file in the public htmlfolder.
This was added in by the seo company (however they are still denying this)

Why they would make changes to this file for redirection is a mystery to me...
So I am not sure that it helps anyone. But I have posted as requested.

The lesson here is more so.

Dont give any other company access to your website...

echo $uri = $_SERVER;
if ($uri = "/news/item/70-kindy-ballet-babes.html?tmpl=component&print=1") {
header("Location: www.wwebsitegoeshere.com.au");
} elseif ($uri = "/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=70:kindy-ballet-babes&Itemid=16") {
header("Location: www.wwebsitegoeshere.com.au");
}

I have gone back and removed the websites name from these posts, just for privacy of the client...

Cheers,

Ant S.
